īy the end of the '50s, Doyle was writing the majority of stories for such important Archie titles as Archie and Betty and Veronica DeCarlo said that when he joined Archie Comics, most of the scripts he was given were written by Doyle. Though he no longer drew stories himself, he continued to write in storyboard form, using a desk that used to belong to Fiction House artist Fran Hopper. "My mind worked better that way." In 1951 he joined Archie Comics as a writer. After he was let go from Fiction House, he decided that he was better suited to writing stories: "It was easier," he said. ĭoyle, one of several Archie contributors who studied art at the Pratt Institute, was originally a penciller for Fiction House comics, working on such titles as Planet Stories. Artist Dan DeCarlo referred to Doyle as "the best". He wrote over 10,000 stories featuring the Archie characters. Frank Doyle (November 17, 1917, in Brooklyn, New York - April 3, 1996, in New Port Richey, Florida) was the head writer for Archie Comics for over thirty years.

What else would Disney prefer you did not know? Plenty. Through interviews with many of the artists and animators who created Song of the South, and through his own extensive research, Korkis delivers both the definitive behind-the-scenes history of the film and a balanced analysis of its cultural impact. In his newest book, Who's Afraid of the Song of the South?, Korkis examines the film from concept to controversy, and reveals the politics that nearly scuttled the project. But is the film racist? Are its themes, its characters, even its music so abominable that Disney has done us a favor by burying the movie in its infamous Vault, where the Company claims it will remain for all time? Disney historian Jim Korkis does not so. And that's why it has forbidden the theatrical re-release of its classic film Song of the South since 1986. 5/13/2023 0 Comments Die Moiren; Tradition und Wandel des Motivs der Schicksalsgot... by Markos GiannoulisIt seems that Moira is related with Tekmor (proof, ordinance) and with Ananke (destiny, necessity), who were primeval goddesses in mythical cosmogonies. In Plato's Republic the Three Fates are daughters of Ananke (necessity). Later they are daughters of Zeus and Themis, who was the embodiment of divine order and law. In the Theogony of Hesiod, the three Moirai are personified, daughters of Nyx and are acting over the gods. In the Homeric poems Moira or Aisa, is related with the limit and end of life, and Zeus appears as the guider of destiny. The gods and men had to submit to them, although Zeus's relationship with them is a matter of debate: some sources say he can command them (the Zeus Moiragetes), yet others suggest he was also bound to the Moirai's dictates. They were independent, at the helm of necessity, directed fate, and watched that the fate assigned to every being by eternal laws might take its course without obstruction. They controlled the mother thread of life of every mortal from birth to death. Their number became fixed at three: Clotho (spinner), Lachesis (allotter) and Atropos (literally 'unturnable' but metaphorically 'inflexible' or 'inevitable' – i.e. r aɪ / or / ˈ m ɔɪ ˌ r iː / ( Ancient Greek: Μοῖραι, "apportioners"), often known in English as the Fates ( Latin: Fata), were the white-robed incarnations of destiny their Roman equivalent was the Parcae (euphemistically the "sparing ones"). It is, Desmond argues, a welfare state that gives the most to those who need the least.ĭesmond speaks with journalist Andrea Elliott about his new ways of thinking around this morally urgent, uniquely American problem-and imagines practical, achievable solutions for making poverty disappear. Why does the United States, the richest country on earth, have more poverty than any other advanced democracy? How can one in eight children go without basic necessities, scores of citizens live and die on the streets, and corporations be authorized to pay poverty wages? In his new book, sociologist Matthew Desmond shows how affluent Americans knowingly and unknowingly keep poor people poor, exploiting them and driving down their wages while forcing them to overpay for housing and access to cash and credit. I wouldn’t classify this book as weird fiction, but it definitely becomes pretty bizarre. It’s a more horrific world than she could have imagined. From this point forward, Samantha gets further and further sucked into the world of the Bunnies. Samantha is surviving on her own, bolstered by time with her sarcastic friend, Ava, until she gets invited to The Bunnies’ private reading time. At the top of the social hierarchy are the Bunnies, a group of wealthy, pretentious women that spend all their time together and gather for their own private readings. She is a writer, but doesn’t fit in with the rest of her class. Samantha Heather Mackie is a graduate student getting her creative writing degree at Yale- I mean, Warren University. I won’t be spoiling the book in this review, so I can’t get into the exact details of what goes down, but I will give you an overview of how smart this book is and why I liked it so much. It involves some truly hideous and harrowing moments, but always couches those in sarcasm and black comedy. Mona Awad’s Bunny is a grotesque, Ivy-League version of Mean Girls. 5/13/2023 0 Comments Jack knox dallas txHe’s also the owner of Café Pacific Restaurants Inc., parent company of the popular restaurant based in Dallas’ Highland Park Village since 1980, and chairman of Sixx Holdings Inc., founded in 1988 to operate Patrizio’s restaurants, which he sold in 2006.Īt various points in his career, Knox also ran oil and gas businesses, serving as chairman and CEO of public companies Summit Energy Inc.
